Music and Perfume to open Ghent

The 33rd Flanders International Film Festival-Ghent opens its doors this evening with a screening of official competition title Perfume: The Story of a Murderer [+see also:

, attended by its German director Tom Tykwer.

The festival is gearing up for ten days of festivities with a whopping programme of almost 200 films (see news), which will close with Paul Verhoeven’s new film Black Book [+see also:

With the focus on film music, the festival is presenting numerous documentaries centred on the theme as well as organising several concerts. This year, there is a tribute to English composer Craig Amstrong, known for his work on the Grammy-winning Ray and on Moulin Rouge, which won him a Golden Globe.

A second renowned composer, Germany’s Peer Raben – who was Fassbinder’s regular composer and more recently worked on the music for 2046 by Wong Kar Wai – will be at the festival for the sixth edition of the World Soundtrack Academy.

The Academy, organised by the festival, will, as every year, award prizes in different categories. This year, Pedro Almodovar’s most regular partner, Spanish composer Alberto Iglesias, has been nominated in the Composers of the Year category for his work on The Constant Gardener [+see also:

He will be in competition alongside Italy’s Dario Marianelli, who is nominated for Pride and Prejudice [+see also:

and is working on Joe Wright’s upcoming film, as well as US composers Danny Elfman (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), John Powell (Ice Age) and James Newton Howard (King Kong).

They join Marinelli in competition for Best Soundtrack with Argentina’s Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain) and US artist John Williams (Munich).

Contenders in the Songs category include Gustavo Santaolalla and Bernie Taupin for Brokeback Mountain, US artist Randy Newman for Cars, British singer Jarvis Cocker for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Gregson-Williams and Imogen Heap for The Chronicles of Narnia and, lastly, Kabelo 'Kaybee' Ikaneng and Zola for their song, "Mdlwembe" (Tsotsi [+see also:
