MEDIA PROGRAMME Budget

Green Light from the European Parliament Cultural Committee

The seven-year Media Programme (2007-2013) worth €671m received a green light Tuesday from the European Parliament's Culture and Education Committee.

The European Commission initially sought €1.1bn, and EU Cultural and Audiovisual Ministers recently pleaded for a €750m package. However, governments finally fixed the figure last May, along with all the other elements of the 2007-2013 EU budget, leaving MEPs unable to call for more aid.

The Parliament report, drafted by German MEP Ruth Hieronymi, commented on the budget decrease: "It does not reflect the ambitions and goals set in the proposal by the European Commission, which had been fully supported by the European Parliament."
