FESTIVALS Austria

A highly successful Viennale

by

The 44th Vienna Film Festival ended yesterday evening with the screening of Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion and a closing night party.

The figures released today revealed that this year's festival attracted 88,900 visitors (compared to 86,200 last year), beating all previous records; 114 of the 313 screenings were sold out before the hour of the screening; and film admissions increased from 77.6% last year to 78.4% this year, an excellent result that nevertheless exceeds the level of interest in documentaries (79.4%) and original formats in general. However, admissions were very low in the Austrian Documentaries section.

The tribute to Peter Whitehead and the Demy/Varda retrospective drew an impressive 4,500 admissions, making it the most successful retrospective in several years.

The Viennale also welcomed 646 media and cinema professionals, including representatives of the 20 major dailies and organisers of festivals such as Rotterdam and Mar del Plata, as well as 109 guests, directors and actors such as Agnès Varda, Peter Whitehead, Claire Simon, Amos Gitai, Julie Depardieu, Martina Gedeck and Austrian directors presenting their films at Vienna.

Next year's edition has already been set to take place October 19-31, 2007.
