ADMISSIONS Portugal

Blockbusters behind admissions increase

by

Admissions in Portugal's film theatres increased by 5% in the first nine months of 2006 (for a total of over 11.8m movie-goers) with respect to the same period in 2005 (nearly 11.m). The data was presented as part of a survey organised by Screenvision Portugal and shows a positive evolution after the "annus horribilis" that was last year, when theatres lost approximately 1.4m admissions.

US blockbusters seem to be behind the rise of admissions, with the list of the most successful titles headed by The Da Vinci Code (753,342 admissions; €3.3m), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (632,749; €2.7m) and Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (490,277; nearly €2m).

, which comes in 14th at the box office, with 207,374 admissions and €900,575 grossed through September 30.

Other anticipated titles to open by the end of the year, such as the new Bond film Casino Royale, are expected to consolidate this recovery.

The same survey emphasised that Saturday's sessions attracted most of the audiences and that urban inhabitants between the ages of 15 and 34 are the most eager film consumers.
