AUDIOVISUAL Europe

Television Without Frontiers debated

by

The Ministers of Culture of the EU member states convened this week in Brussels in order to set the course of action to be followed in the review process of the Television Without Frontiers directive. The Committee of Education, Youth and Culture will also discuss other subjects related to the future of the audiovisual industry.

Today, a debate chaired by the Finnish Transport and Communications Minister Susanna Huovinen and Finnish Minister of Culture Tanja Saarela will focus on four essential questions: the scope of the directive, the question of jurisdiction, product placement and quantitative advertising rules.

The meeting aims to move forward the review process of the Television Without Frontiers Directive, which is expected to introduce common minimum standards for all audiovisual media and broadcasting, regardless of the broadcasting platform used, updated rules on advertising and more flexible legislation for broadcasters.

Another key subject of the meeting is the extension of the directive to all services, particularly digital ones, due to their current increasing development.
