Sweden enjoys MEDIA support
by Annika Pham
With 18 Swedish film and multimedia companies supported this year for a total of €810,000, Sweden is the fifth most successful EU country in accessing development grants from the MEDIA Plus Programme, after France, the UK, Germany and Italy.
Three companies were awarded support for the first round of Slate Funding – Bob Film Sweden (€90,000 for fiction), Story AB (€60,000 for documentaries) and Filmkreatörerna Prah och Björk AB (€90,000 for fiction and documentary) – but only one company, Tre Vänner AB, was the lucky recipient of the €150,000 support from Slate Funding Stage 2.
The 14 Swedish production companies that received advance development support on single projects include HB PeÅ Holmquist Film, who received a €20,000 grant for the documentary Young Freud in Gaza, currently screening at Amsterdam’s IDFA Forum; and animation studios ZigZag Animation, who was awarded a €90,000 grant for the development of Spot and Splodge, based on Lotta Geffenblad’s children’s books.
Over the last six years (with the exception of 2005), the number of Swedish companies submitting projects and receiving support has increased steadily according to the Swedish MEDIA Desk based in Stockholm.
