London to Brighton in UK

As the battle of the titans between B&B (Bond and Borat) continues at the UK box office, both soaring miles above the rest of the film landscape (£28M for Casino Royale [+see also:

and £21m for Borat), six new films are taking their chances today, including three UK films or co-productions catering to different segments of local audiences.

Aiming at the adult arthouse crowd, Vertigo has put together a 16-print run for London to Brighton [+see also:

]
by promising debut film Paul Andrew Williams. The low budget film follows 24 hours in the life of a prostitute and a young runaway, fleeing to Brighton in a desperate attempt to save their own lives.

Totally review-led and carried by an excellent buzz from international film festivals, where it won various prestigious awards (including the Audience Award and Michael Powell Award in Edinburgh), the film has had several previews across the UK attended by the director and hopefully the word-of-mouth will help the film expand from its niche audience. The film, produced by Steel Mill Pictures (co-headed by the director) and Wellington Films Ltd., just won the BIFA Award for Best Achievement in Production.

On a totally different scale, UIP’s muscle is behind the children’s film Flushed Away [+see also:

, the first CGI animated film by the creators of Wallace & Gromit, Aardman Animation Features, and their third collaboration with Dreamworks Animation. The film is co-directed by Aardman veteran Sam Fell and Dreamworks story artist David Bowers. Famous stars lending their voices include Kate Winslet, Ian McKellen, Bill Nighy, Hugh Jackman (X-Men) and Jean Reno who plays... Le Frog!

Between the two extremes, Pathé Distribution is targeting the 15+ audience with UK comedy thriller Big Nothing, starring popular UK comedian Simon Pegg, Natasha McElhone and Mimi Rogers. The second feature by French-born Jean-Baptiste Andrea was produced by H2O Motion Pictures in Canada, in co-production with Pathé Pictures who is handling worldwide sales as well as distribution in the UK and France.
