Perfectly timed to prolong the magic of Christmas into the first part of the new year for young and grown up kids, Miss Potter, one of Britain’s biggest independent film of 2006, is the biggest film opening today nationwide through Momentum Pictures.

The €20.5m US/UK film directed by Australian born Chris Noonan had its world premiere in London in early December and since then Momentum has been building the film’s audience awareness with advance previews from December 26-January 1, promotional tie-ins with various media partners (including Timesonline) and a special Beatrix Potter Showcase at London’s V&A Museum from mid-November until May 2007.

The film was produced in the US by Phoenix Pictures and David Kirschner Produtions with co-financing from BBC Films, the UK Film Council (who invested €1.7m through its Premiere Fund) and the Isle of Man Film. International sales are being handled by Summit Entertainment.

The film focuses on famous UK children’s writer Beatrix Potter’s first steps into publishing and her struggles against a domineering mother and chauvinistic Victorian society. US star actress Renee Zellweger has been nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as Miss Potter and other key UK cast members include Ewan McGregor and Emily Watson.

Two other European productions/co-productions open today on a limited print run: Icelandic film Dark Horse by Dagur Kári, released by Swipe Films, and the Chinese/Italian film Little Red Flowers by Zhang Yuan, distributed by Miracle Communications.
