If the first weeks are a prediction for the year to come, then there is reason to rejoice with the cultural diversity of this week’s new releases. Seven new films arrive on screens: three European productions, three from North America – including Canadian title Mémoires affectives by Francis Leclerc (Imagine Film Distribution) – and one Iranian title (Offside by Jafar Panahi).

(see Focus) by Corneliu Porumboiu. The director’s debut feature was voted Caméra d’Or winner at Cannes by a very Belgian jury, presided over by the Dardenne brothers.

Although not a European production, US majority-funded The Prestige nevertheless features a UK director, Christopher Nolan, and some talented British actors, such as Christian Bale, Michael Caine and pop legend David Bowie.
