Baftas: All hail the King and Queen

Many top UK film professionals currently in Berlin had for the first time to return to London to attend the Bafta awards ceremony held last night in London, as the British Academy changed the dates to two weeks ahead of the Oscars.

Their efforts were largely rewarded as the biggest annual UK film award event was a triumphal night for local productions, with Stephen Frears’ The Queen [+see also:

and Kevin McDonald’s The Last King of Scotland [+see also:

winning the top awards, respectively, for Best Film and Best Actress (Helen Mirren) and Best British Film and Best Actor (Forest Whitaker).

Surprisingly, UK scriptwriter Peter Morgan did not receive the Best Original Screenplay award for The Queen (it went instead to US independent sleeper Little Miss Sunshine), but was lucky enough to be nominated in the Adapted Screenplay category for The Last King of Scotland – alongside co-writer Jeremy Brock – for which they picked up a golden mask.

Although competition was tough in the Best Direction category, Paul Greengrass managed to get the final vote for United 93 [+see also:

, ahead of other favourites Martin Scorsese and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu.

Two other films launched at Cannes continued their brilliant career: Andrea Arnold's Red Road won the Carl Foreman Award for Best First Feature Film, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth won three Baftas, including Best Film not in the English language.
