Finding digital n[ever]land

by

From March 16-18, Rome’s Casa del Cinema will host the fifth edition of n[ever]land – percorsi al digitale (founded and directed by Enzo Aronica and promoted by the Trio Alma Mahler Association), which explores the applications of digital technology.

Special guests of this year’s edition of n[ever]land will be Aldo Signoretti and Vittorio Sodano, two make-up artists nominated for this year’s Oscar for their work on Apocalypto, Mel Gibson’s epic on the decline of the Mayan civilisation.

The international guest will be prolific New Yorker Abel Ferrara, who will discuss his new film Go Go Tales, an Italian co-production shot in the Cinecittà studios, starring Asia Argento, Riccardo Scamarcio, Valeria Golino and Stefania Rocca alongside Willem Dafoe, Bob Hoskins and Matthew Modine.

The event’s digital screens will this year be dedicated to screening a series of titles shot in HD, accompanied by Q&As with the directors: La radice del male by Silvana Zancolò (among the first examples of filmmaking to come about from within a post-production company, UBIK Visual Effects), The Silver Rope by Fabio Resinaro and Fabio Guaglione and Billo, il Grand Dakhaar by Laura Muscardin, winner of the Critics Award at the latest Villerupt Festival.

Proxima, one of the main companies operating on the Italian visual film effects scene, will also be onhand to illustrate the digital secrets behind the latest films by Paolo Virzì, Marco Risi, Mario Monicelli, Giovanni Veronesi and Fausto Brizzi, as well as the interesting work on Ted Nicolau’s horror title Etruskan Mask.

Further enriching the event’s 2007 edition will be a roundup of the most recent works on the global landscape, from the latest editions of some of the world’s foremost audiovisual competitions, from the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival – which will bring the winning film of “Labo 2007” to Rome – to New York’s Brooklyn International Film Festival.
