Morricone awarded for career, Canonero for costume design

Oscar night was also Ennio Morricone’s night as the 78 year-old composer, after five nominations for the coveted statue, finally received an honorary award from the Academy for his “magnificent and multi-faceted contribution to the art of film music”.

The Italian maestro renowned for having scored over 400 films – including Once Upon a Time in America, The Untouchables and The Mission – received the Oscar on the Kodak Theater stage from Clint Eastwood, who translated his emotional-filled words: "I dedicate this award to my wife and all those artists who deserved but never received it. I consider this a starting rather than ending point, from which to improve my films and my music".

Owing her acclaim to films such as Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange and The Shining and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather trilogy, the other Italian award winner of the evening was costume designer Milena Canonero. The Turin native, who already has two Oscars to her name (for Barry Lyndon and Chariots of Fire), as well as numerous nominations, this year snagged the Academy Award for the sumptuous attire in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette.
