Young talent spreads wings

Katarzyna Figura, one of the stars of Polish cinema (2003 Best Actress Eagle for Ryszard Brylski’s Żurek, Best Actress at the 2003 Gdynia Film Festival for Piotr Szulkin’s Ubu, The King), will play one of the lead roles in Aria Diva.

The film, currently in production, is directed by young shorts director Agnieszka Smoczyńska (3 love, Kapelusz, Sieroty).

Inspired by an Olga Tokarczuk novella, Aria Diva is the story of Basia, a woman in her thirties with a stable and fulfilling family and professional life. Things take a change for the worse, however, when she moves into a house owned by an opera singer.

The film is being directed and produced as part of the “30 minut” programme for young directors, an initiative of the Wajda Master School, TVP Kultura, Polish Film Institute and the SFP (Polish Directors’ Association).

Another young director to benefit from the programme is Piotr Matwiejczyk, who has hired a cast of well-known actors for his new production Pamiętasz mnie? (lit. “Do You Remember Me?”). The film, which began shooting on February 27, stars Renata Dancewicz (Maciej Ślesicki’s Tato) and Mirosław Baka (Krzysztof Kieślowski’s A Short Film About Killing).

Matwiejczyk’s film centres on a husband and father who tries to return to normal family life after a few years behind bars. Eager to make up for the years he lost and to win over the feelings of his wife and his daughter, he also hopes to be forgiven for his sins.

Executive producer Anna Pupin (Muflon Pictures) still does not know when the film will premiere.

Meanwhile, Matwiejczyk’s latest title, Wstyd (Grand Prix Cinema Local Era Nowe Horyzonty 2006), opens in cinemas in the second half of March.
