- Scotland’s Mullan and Russia’s Sokurov win important awards at Toronto, the gateway to the north-American film industry

Hot on the heels of his Venetian triumph, Scottish director, Peter Mullan won the Discovery award for best newcomer at the 27th Toronto Film Festival that ended on 15 September. The Canadian event is considered one of the world’s most important film industry appointments, not least because it is a gateway to the all-important north-American market.
Russian director Alexander Sokurov took home the very first Independent Fim Channel Visions Award for his magnificent one-take 96-minute Russian Ark. The award includes a cash prize of Euros 20,000.
A German-New Zealand co-production entitled Whale Rider, directed by Niki Caro and based on a Maori fairytale won the AGF Audience Award with the UK’s Bend It Like Beckham as runner up. The 11th Fipresci prize went to Gael Morel’s (A toute vitesse) Les Chemins de l’oued while Susanne Bier’s Dogme film entitled Open Hearts won a special mention.
