Independent cinema in Rome

Spring brings with it the return to Rome of independent cinema and the sixth edition of the Rome Independent Film Festival (RIFF), to be held from from April 13-19 and dedicated entirely to independent films.

The programme is made up of 25 features, 18 documentaries, 50 shorts (of which 25 are Italian, 15 international and 10 digital) as well as 10 animation videos, for a total of 100 films in competition from over 50 countries worldwide.

The festival will open with the sparkling comedy Sweet, Sweet Marja, a debut film by Rome native Angelo Frezza.

Films in competition include Italian title Il nostro Messia by Claudio Serughetti, starring Sarah Maestri, Rosalinda Celentano and Tinto Brass, and Spanish director Victor Garcia Leon’s Vete de mí, nominated for a 2006 Goya.

In collaboration with the Brussels International Festival of Fantastic Film, Horror Day will feature Marmorea by Swiss director Markus Fischer and Ghost Son [+see also:

by Italy’s Lamberto Bava.

Other thematic evenings will be on Spanish, French, Canadian and Iranian cinema, as well as the usual day on human rights, this year dedicated to the subject of violence against women.

Also programmed are a conference on the Italian film law, a seminar on television formats and a workshop on digital cinema.
