Neighbours' films lack appeal
- Swedes don't like Scandinavian films, Norwegian products are the least popular, but there's hope on the horizon
Swedes are not very enthusiastic about Danish and Norwegian films. In 2001, just 165,000 Swedes chose to see a Danish movie whereas 387,000 Danes bought tickets to Swedish titles. According to a survey carried out by the Swedish Film Institute, Norwegian films are the least popular; in 2001, just 20,000 Danes went to see a Norwegian film although this number is likely to increase considerably in 2002 as a direct result of the huge Scandinavian hit by Petter Naess entitled Elling.
With regards to importing Scandinavian films, Norway topped the list in 2001 with a total of 20 Danish and Swedish film, followed by Denmark’s 12 from their two neighbours, with Sweden bringing up the rear with just 8 titles from Denmark and Norway. Nevertheless, this data is an improvement on past performance, and indicates that Scandinavian audiences are gradually acquiring a taste for their domestic productions, and that can only be good news for the industry.
