Multi-screens continue to expand

Italy’s multi-screen empire is growing quite significantly. For the eight-month period from January 1 to August 31, 2002 the number of multi-screens grew from 57 to 76, with the total number of screens in operation rising from 434 to 635. According to a report compiled by Cinetel, Italy's official film theatre monitor who control 74 per cent of all Italian cinemas, and published by film industry associations AGIS and ANEC’s official daily paper, "Il Giornale dello Spettacolo", fully 39.78 per cent of all tickets sold in Italy during the first 8 months of 2002 were for films programmed at multi-screen theatres. This is a 10 per cent increase on the same period in 2001.
The Cinetel report shows that the number of cinemas with 8 or more screens has risen from 28 to 41, and that they contribute 29.32 per cent of the total box office returns of all Italian cinemas. The number of multiplexes with between 5 and 7 screens has also gone up from 28 to 35. These multi-screens make up 10.46 per cent of total box office takings.
