Stellan Skarsgård has joined Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth in the international cast of Universal’s film adaptation of Mamma Mia!, the hugely popular ABBA musical set to start shooting this summer in London and in Greece.

Using the same key creative team as the musical, director Phyllida Lloyd and writer Catherine Johnson, the film is produced in the US by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman (Playtone) with Judy Craymer (Littlestar) for Universal Pictures. The two ‘B’s of ABBA, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (ABBA founding members and songwriters) are executive producers.

The film is the story of a bride-to-be (Amanda Seyfried from US TV series Veronica Mars), raised by a single mum (Streep) who wants to know the identity of her biological father before her wedding day. She finds three ‘possible’ dads (Skarsgård, Brosnan, Firth) and invites them to her wedding.

Twenty-two of ABBA’s most famous songs will feature in the film, including “Mamma Mia”, “Take a Chance on Me” and “The Winner Takes it All”. Mamma Mia the musical has toured 130 cities around the world since its London debut in 1999 and has been seen by over 20 million ABBA fans so far.
