FESTIVALS Poland

Prix Visionica: For creativity in television

by

Prix Visionica, the leading international festival for creative television, opens in Wrocław today, where it will run until April 29.

Festival organisers have set themselves ambitious objectives: to overcome the challenges of contemporary television, make it possible to examine socio-cultural changes on TV and show the diversity of forms created for the medium.

"What makes us different from other festivals of this kind is that we focus on the cultural aspect. Our aims do not concern everyday mainstream television, but rather specialised channels and, in general, public television," festival artistic director Piotr Krajewski told Cineuropa. "The festival is an axis that links television, culture and innovation, in terms of form as well as the content of productions. The festival is also innovative in the sense that it is distinctly open. Usually festivals of this kind tend to be reserved for professionals. Here we invite the public to participate".

For the first edition of the festival, directors, producers and distributors from 27 countries have submitted 284 programmes, 77 of which (from 22 countries) were selected in the main competition. The competition is divided into five categories: fiction, documentary, theatre, television, music and dance and "intermezzo" (experimental forms).

Up for grabs is the Grand Prix Visionica, which is accompanied by an impressive €25,000, while the total awards offer more than double.

The jury comprises Agnieszka Holland (director), Sławomir Grünberg (DoP and producer), Olaf Grunert (ARTE/ZDF), AlexandreVlasov (GTRK Kultura), Henk van der Meulen (NPS) and Jerzy Kapuściński (TVP).

The festival is organised by the city of Wrocław and Telewizja Polska SA (TVP) in collaboration with ARTE and Russian channel Telekanal Kultura.
