Essen discusses UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity

by

The UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expression that came into force on March 18 is currently providing the focus for debates at a conference entitled “Cultural diversity, Europe’s Wealth. Bringing the UNESCO Convention to Life”, taking place from April 26-28 in the German city of Essen, which has been chosen as the 2010 European Capital of Culture.

Beyond the concept of diversity and its limits and possibilities, participants will discuss the application of the Convention in Europe, in the spirit of a statement made by Wim Wenders: “I am in favour of paying the relatively small price for maintaining diversity, rather than the large price of its loss”.

The conference is organised by the German Commission for UNESCO (www.unesco.de) with the support of the German Cultural Foundation, North-Rhine Westphalia, the German Minister of Foreign Affairs and the European Commission.
