A cinema city, finally

by

The Polish Cinecittà – which the country has been waiting for over 40 years – will be built in Nowe Miasto nad Pilicą (80 km from Warsaw in the Łódź direction), on the grounds of a former military airport.

The agreement on the investment was signed yesterday by the Ministers of Culture and National Defense, the presidents of the Polish Film Institute (PISF), the SFP (Polish Directors’ Association), the region of Mazovie and the Chamber of Polish Audiovisual Producers.

The city will be built on a 23,000 square-metre site that will be used for the production of feature films, documentaries and series and commercials. The investment budget is estimated at €100m. The construction of the city will be financed by EU structural funds, the PISF, the SFP, the Ministry of Culture and the voïvodie (Polish administrative division) of Mazovie – as well as the donation of the site of the former airport at Nowe Miasto nad Pilicą by the Minister of Defense. Full funding is expected to be secured by the end of 2007.

Once the project’s financing has been confirmed, construction is scheduled to begin in 2008, with filming planned to begin in the city by the end of 2009. The first productions will deal with the 1944 Warsaw Rising.

The investment is also significant in terms of employment. Between 150 and 200 full-time staff are expected to be recruited, and between 1000 and 1500 during periods of production.
