FESTIVALS Germany

Herzog gets ball rolling at Munich

by

Werner Herzog will open the Munich Film Festival (June 22-30), which this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The well-known director will be presenting his new film, Rescue Dawn, for the first time in his home country.

The film is the true story of US army pilot Dieter Dengler, who escaped a torture camp in Laos during the Vietnam War. Herzog has been interested in Dengler’s life for 10 years and in 1997 directed a documentary called Little Dieter Needs to Fly about the pilot, who will be played here by Welsh-born actor Christian Bale.

Rescue Dawn will be released in Germany by Central Film although the date has still to be decided.
