Locarno celebrates the “ladies” of Italian cinema

by

From Alida Valli, Anna Magnani, Lucia Bosé and Sofia Loren to Asia Argento, Monica Bellucci, Laura Morante and Giovanna Mezzogiorno: all the actresses who have been part of the best of Italian cinema swill be celebrated at the Locarno Film Festival (August 1-11) in an event entitled "Signore & Signore" (“Ladies & Ladies”), organised by Piera Detassis and produced by Cinecittà Holding.

For its 60th edition, the festival will offer a selection of 20 films, made from 1941 through today, newly reprinted by Cinecittà Holding, including some restored and never-before-seen works. These include: Mario Soldati’s Old-Fashioned World, Luchino Visconti’s Bellissima, Vittorio De Sica’s Two Women, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Theorem and Dino Risi’s The Bishop’s Bedroom, along with more recent films such as Giuseppe Tornatore’s Malena, Nanni Moretti’s The Son’s Room and Facing Windows by Ferzan Ozpetek.

“Locarno has always been tied to Italian cinema,” said Frédéric Maire, artistic director of the festival, “and has had the pleasuring of welcoming many of its 'ladies' in the past. For the festival’s 60th edition we wanted to re-offer some pearls of an extremely rich film industry, whose auteur films enjoy success among audiences".

The novelties of this edition also include the section "Retour à Locarno", dedicated to directors the festival has “discovered”: Mike Leigh, Paulo Rocha, Marco Bellocchio, Marco Tullio Giordana and Claude Chabrol.
