Summer deadlines
- Entry deadlines for the end of July and the beginning of August for several film festivals throughout Europe
Candidates still have a few days to submit their films. The 27th of July is the deadline to enter the Chicago Film Festival, which from the 4th to the 18th of October, will present feature films, documentaries and short films. The juries which award prizes will be
made up of international critics (FIPRESCI).
Three European festivals have deadlines of July 31 for candidates who wish
to submit their work:
The Spanish San Sebastian Film Festival, will celebrate its 50th anniversary
from the 19th to the 28th of September 2002. It will present a retrospective
of the works of Volker Schlöndorff and Michael Powell and will feature a
section dedicated to the 1950s, with a selection of the best films of that
era.
Going further north to Montpellier, the 24th Festival of Mediterranean
Cinema will take place from October 25 to November 3, 2002 and is open to
all Mediterranean cinematography, (feature length, shorts, and
documentaries). It also offers the opportunity for producers and directors
to present works in progress in order to obtain financial backing to
complete the films.
In Sweden, for the 8th time, the Fantasy Film Festival will present the best
films of the genre to fantasy fans.
August 1 is the deadline to enter four other festivals: The International
Film Festival of Alexandria will be presented in September and is open to
Mediterranean cinematography. The Portuguese festival, Cinanima is
exclusively dedicated to animated films and will take place between the 4th
and the 10th of November, 2002. This 26th edition of the festival is
gathering films of various formats (feature length and shorts). The
Titanic International Film Festival in Budapest will celebrate its 10th
anniversary and will continue to focus its attention on originality in
cinematography, presented through films of various formats (shorts,
documentaries and feature length).
The German festival, Young East European Cinema, takes place in Cottbus,
Germany, from October 30 to November 3, 2002, and will concentrate on films
coming from East Europe. In addition to prizes awarded by its international
jury, it will also host a jury from FIPRESCI which will present a Best Film
award.
The last 2 deadlines:
The London Film Festival will be presented from the 7th to the 22nd of
November, 2002 and has a cut-off date of August 2 for submissions. All
film formats (from 8mm to 70mm) are acceptable. This 46th edition has
various sections and will give the opportunity to hundreds of film producers
from all over the world to meet others who work in this sector (thanks also
to the presence of a market in this festival).
The Swedish Umea Film Festival takes place between the 12th and the 18th of
September, 2002 and is the largest festival in Scandinavia. The deadline
for submissions is August 5. A novel section, «dark camera» will
present films from all over the world which are extraordinary, banned,
censored or those which have simply deteriorated.
