FUNDING Belgium

Centre du Cinéma provides funding to Du Welz, Lafosse, Abel and Gordon

by

After the Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds (see news), now the Centre du Cinéma et de l'Audiovisuel de la Communauté française has officially published its results of the first session of its selection committee. The projects selected are just as attractive as those backed by the VAF and see the emergence of some Belgian francophone names.

Some previously rumoured projects were given the green light, such as Fabrice Du Welz’s second feature Vinyan (currently shooting in Thailand, see news), which received €300,000, while Joachim Lafosse’s upcoming and fourth feature Elève Libre was funded €487,000.

(see interview), Rumba, has been granted support of €500,000. The film will be produced by the directors’ own outfit Courage Mon Amour Films with France’s MK2 Productions. Further backing is provided by CNC advances on receipts.

Starring the directors themselves, Abel and Gordon, alongside Philippe Martz , Rumba is the story of two teachers in a small rural school, passionate about rumba. A car accident leaves one without a leg and the other her memory, while the man who caused the accident reappears once again.

Scriptwriting funding granted included €12,500 for the new project by Mobutu, King of Zaire and Congo River: Beyond Darkness director Thierry Michel, who is returning to the Congo to make Katanga: Mineral Business, from the slate of Les Films de la Passerelle.
