First edition of Malta Film Festival cancelled

The Malta International Film Festival (see news), meant to be the first ever international event of its kind in Malta – with illustrious guests already set to head to La Valletta next September – will no longer be held.

The announcement came from Artistic Director Hisham Abdel Khalek, who stated: "Our enthusiasm [was] far from being shared by the Ministry for Tourism of Culture and the Malta Film Commission", whose "growing hostility" led to the event’s cancellation.

The Maltese Ministry and Film Commission have not yet made their official decisions but sources at the Commission have told Cineuropa that "positioning an international festival between Venice, San Sebastian and Toronto would have been an error".
