Local films up during first six months

by

Local films were up by 2.2% during the first six months of the year with over a million admissions and a total 20.6% market share against 18.4% in 2006, according to official figures published by Film & Kino, the Norwegian Cinema Association.

As usual, driving figures up were children’s titles, such as The Junior Olsen Gang: The Secret of the Silvermine, currently the third most popular film of the year with over 291,338 admissions, the animated film Elias & the Royal Yacht (229,910 admissions), Svein & Rotta & the UFO Mystery (132,224), as well as Eva Dahr’s romantic film Mars & Venus (129,729).

Total admissions, however, were down by 13% on 2006 with over five million tickets sold, still a slight improvement on 2005 (+ 1.4%).

For Lene Løker, head of Film & Kino, 2006 was an exceptionally good year with many strong blockbusters pulling figures up. Overall, however, “admission figures have been rather stable since the beginning of the 1990s”, she stressed. “Parallel to that, DVD sales reached a record high in 2006, which shows that it is possible to exploit films different ways in the same marketplace. And what is important – as shown by the recent study from MMI commissioned by Film & Kino – is that it is the same people who watch films on DVD and on the big screens”.
