Fribourg gets new artistic director

by

French film critic Edouard Waintrop has been appointed the new artistic director of the upcoming 22nd Fribourg International Film Festival (March 1-8, 2008).

He will take over from Martial Knaebel, who has been artistic director for the past fifteen years, and in early September joins the team headed by Franziska Burkhardt.

Waintrop, who began his career working for the French daily Libération in 1982, is particularly interested in new Argentinean cinema, Mexican classics and Japanese crime dramas.

While Hou Hsiao Hsien, Alejandro Gonzales Iñaritu and Edward Yang feature among Waintrop’s favourite directors, the critic has often written on Lubitsch, Ford, Wilder, Iosseliani, Satyajit Ray, as well as Souleymane Cissé and Ousmane Sembene, two directors who he saw working in Africa.

He has also collaborated on various collective works and covered a number of film festivals across Europe, as well as in Latin and North America.
