Lisbon hosts Cultural Forum for Europe

by

From September 26-28, Lisbon’s Centro Cultural de Belém will host the Cultural Forum for Europe, an event organised as part of the Portuguese presidency of the European Union.

Based on the principle that Europe's upcoming cultural policies must be preceded by a broad consultation of civil society, the Cultural Forum for Europe will debate three topics in three separate workshops: intercultural dialogue, economy of culture and the visibility of European culture on other continents.

The conclusions of these three themes will be presented on September 28 to the Ministers of Culture of EU Member States, to the President of the European Commission and to the representatives of Europe's cultural institutions related to the theme in question.

According to Portugal's Ministry of Culture, it is expected that "future deliberations for the creation of a European Cultural Agenda may result from this meeting". Artists, cultural managers, researchers, foundations, patrons and sponsors are expected to attend but names have not yet been announced.

In May of this year, the European Commission approved a Communication for a European agenda for culture in a globalizing world, which comes after the publication of a Study on the Economy of Culture, whose annexes include figures on film and on its relatively minor impact on the European economy (see news).
