Potter beats Bond to take film franchise crown
A new British icon has dethroned an older one as the lucrative Harry Potter franchise has become the biggest ever in global box office history, out-grossing the popular James Bond series. The five Potter films have grossed £2.2bn worldwide, overtaking the £2.19bn taken by the 22 Bond films to date.
George Lucas’ six Star Wars films are now in third place with £2bn in earnings. The Potter collections will be further boosted by the remaining two instalments of the series based on J.K. Rowling’s best-selling books.
The most recent release in the Potter series – The Order of the Phoenix [+see also:

Warner Brothers Domestic Distribution President Dan Fellman said, “It is a thrill to see the Harry Potter franchise reach this unparalleled mark. With two movies yet to come, it is amazing to think what heights the franchise could reach by the end of the decade.”
Warner Brothers International Distribution President Veronika Kwan-Rubinek added, “The appeal of the Harry Potter movies knows no border, no age limit and no language barrier.”
