Les mamies… has been chosen by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture as the national candidate for the Best Foreign Language Film category “because of the universality of the theme and the quality of its script, direction and cast.

A box office success both at home and abroad (600,000 admissions in Switzerland and over 250,000 in Austria and Germany), the touching comedy regularly receives enthusiastic reviews from the international press.”

Produced by Alfi Sinniger (1991 Oscar for Xavier Koller’s Journey of Hope) and distributed by Swiss subsidiary Buena Vista International, the title has every chance of being selected. Its fate will be decided when the final five Best Foreign Language Film nominees are unveiled in January.

Meanwhile Shake the Devil Off has been nominated in the Best Feature Documentary section, a category reserved for US and foreign productions distributed in the States. The documentary – which had its world premiere at the Locarno International Film Festival in August – gives an account of the closing of a parish in New Orleans six months after Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on the Louisiana city.
