The main goal of the Warsaw International Film Festival is to showcase new films in Poland, allowing audiences to see titles shown at Venice, Locarno and San Sebastian.

At its 23rd edition – which opens today and runs until October 21 – more than 150 films will be making their Polish premiere. The competition section is divided into four categories: International Competition New Films – New Directors (for first and second films); Warsaw Competition (for feature films); Free Spirit Competition (for independent cinema); and Documentary Features Competition.

Out of competition sections include screenings of films by master directors, film discoveries, German cinema (German Panorama) and shorts.

Films from Armenia (including three documentaries) and Estonia have a special place at the festival, which is also hosting the 3rd Warsaw CentEast Market, aimed at industry professionals specialising in Central and Eastern European cinema. Participants at the market will have the opportunity to watch films, attend presentations of films currently in production, participate in pitching sessions and editing workshops. The market takes place October 17-21.
