AWARDS Europe

The Queen leads EFA nominations

by

On Saturday, the European Film Academy (EFA) announced the nominees of the 20th European Film Awards at the Seville European Film Festival (November 2-10).

Stephen Frears’ UK/French/Italian co-production The Queen (see Focus) leads the pack with a total of six nominations, including for best film, director and actress – veteran Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar earlier this year for her performance as Elizabeth II (see news).

After picking up the Palm d’Or, Romania's most successful film ever, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days by Cristian Mungiu (see Focus), is running in four categories (film, director, actress and screenwriter).

The members of the EFA did not overlook other, more recent titles, such as Fatih Akin’s The Edge of Heaven (see Focus), competing with three nominations, and Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud’s Persepolis (see Focus), the second animated film in the history of the Academy to compete for best film award, after Chicken Run (2000).

The winners will announced on December 1, in a ceremony to be held in Berlin.
