Gröning shatters the silence

, on the monks of the Great Carthusain monastery, Philip Gröning attracted attention, was lauded by viewers and critics alike and won prizes at the EFA Awards and Sundance, all the while remaining shrouded in silence. For his next project, however, the documentary director has decided to shatter the silence and expound upon the subject of the film's title: art (“kunst” in German).

Kunst!, which will be an international co-production between the director’s production company and other partners, will approach its subject matter philosophically: Gröning will endeavour to discover how and why art is produced by meeting artists in the throes of creation and visiting the world’s most important artistic events.

The North-Rhine Westphalia regional fund has just granted €20,000 for production of this new project. Matthias Oberg's Ein Ton Blau (his first documentary), dealing with the same subject matter via the portrait of two young artists, is amongst the other projects financed.
