De Sica prize to Wenders, Comencini, Servillo and Ozpetek
Italian cinema is "an essential and extraordinary forte for our country, and we are all responsible for always safeguarding and renewing it," said President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano, during a ceremony attended by film industry professionals today for the 2007 Vittorio De Sica Awards.
Protecting and promoting creativity and Italian talent in cinema is "a commitment that, above all, the state must undertake,” he added, “as well as private [investors], those from the world of business and information, and citizens." Napolitano also stated his approval for the resources allocated to cinema through the legislative measures of the new Finance Law.
The De Sica Awards this year went to German director Wim Wenders for European cinema, while the Italian awards went to master filmmaker Luigi Comencini (who passed away last April), actor Toni Servillo, actress Luciana Littizzetto, producer Claudio Bonivento, screenwriter Gianni Romoli, director Ferzan Ozpetek and production designer Piero De Bernardi.
