BERLINALE 2008 Competition

Costa-Gavras to head festival jury

by

The organisers of the Berlin International Film Festival announced yesterday that France-based Greek director Costa-Gavras will preside the international jury of the 2008 edition, to take place February 7-17.

Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick said he was "delighted to have been able to enlist such an eminent director" whose work is considered "both social commentary and great art".

The multiple Oscar-winning director (notably of Z, the 1969 political thriller that catapulted him to international fame) and former president of the Cinémathèque has happy memories of Berlin, having won the 1990 Golden Bear for Music Box and been in competition again in 2002 with Amen (starring Ulrich Tukur and Ulrich Mühe).

When he has fulfilled his role as jury president, Costa-Gavras will set to work again in March. His new film Eden is West marks his return to Greece after a 40-year absence.
