Red carpet for Rosi

by

The organisers of the next Berlin International Film Festival (February 7-17) announced yesterday that the octogenarian Italian director Francesco Rosi would receive an honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement.

Rosi has directed films such as Salvatore Giuliano (1962), lauded at Berlin; The Mattei Affair, winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes 1972; Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1987) and The Truce (1997).

The Berlinale will also pay homage to the director by hosting a retrospective of his work.

Festival director Dieter Kosslick, who yesterday highlighted the social and political engagement of Costa-Gavras’ films when announcing that he would preside the jury, expressed similar sentiments about Rosi: "With their explosive power, Rosi’s films are still persuasive today. His works are classics of politically engaged cinema".
