, Pedro Almodóvar and Penélope Cruz have embraced a new project together. The Spanish star has been confirmed as part of the cast of the Oscar-winning director's new film, Los abrazos rotos ("Broken Hugs"), principal photography on which is scheduled to begin in January 2008.

For the time being, Almodóvar has decided to put aside the script of a plastic surgeon who takes revenge on his son's death to focus on what is said to be a 1950s-style noir film. Not many other details have been disclosed about the story that, according to the filmmaker, "is not going to be a comedy, although it will have some comical undertones."

Los abrazos rotos will be produced by the director’s long-time producer, his brother Agustín, for El Deseo.
