For the Polish film industry and audiences alike, the 2008 Oscar nominations are a major event. There has not been a Polish Oscar nomination for more than 25 years, since Wajda’s The Girls from Wilko was nominated back in 1980.
The director was among the nominees on two other occasions: in 1976 for The Promised Land and in 1982 for Man of Iron. In 2000, Wajda was awarded an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement.
The animated film Peter & the Wolf is an adaptation of Prokofiev’s ballet and is co-produced by Studio Se-ma-for, Break Thru Peter and Storm, with backing from Channel Four and the PISF (Polish Film Institute).
