, directed by Sweden’s celebrated shorts filmmaker Jens Jonsson, received the World Cinema Competition Award and the World Cinema Cinematography Award: Dramatic (for Askild Vik Edvardsen) at the Sundance Film Festival’s closing ceremony last Saturday.

“I think it is an incredibly courageous choice of the jury to have bet on such a small film, and I’m so happy for Askild, who is one of the best cinematographers in the Nordic region after Sven Nykvist,” commented Jonsson.

Based an original script by Jonsson and Hans Gunnarsson (Evil), The King of Ping Pong was produced by Bob Film Sweden in co-production with Filmpool Nord, Nordisk Film, SVT, in association with Jens Jonsson AB and support from the Swedish Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, the MEDIA Programme and Eurimages.

The film opened the Göteborg International Film Festival last Friday, where it is competing for the Nordic Film Prize. It is also vying for a VPRO Tiger Award in Rotterdam.

The domestic release through Nordisk Film is set for February 8.
