Film20 disbands to form broader producer’s alliance
Film20 – the German lobby group founded at the 2001 Berlinale by Bernd Eichinger, Ulrich Felsberg and Günter Rohrbach to represent the interests of film and television producers (grouped together for the first time) – will be officially disbanded tomorrow, February 29, to form a broader alliance, the Alliance of German Producers-Film and Television.
Beyond its pressure group activities, in recent years Film20 has tried to bring together different types of producers so as to move closer to the British model PACT, which represents the interests of producers of film, television and other media products. "Mission accomplished!", announced Georgia Tornow, secretary general of Film20, whose position also terminates tomorrow.
The new Alliance – whose official inauguration will take place on March 3 in Berlin – will unite Film20, BV (National Federation of Television Producers) and the AGEP (Association of German Entertainment Producers) under one umbrella entity which should be better equipped to apprehend the fundamental issues facing the industry. These include the current drafting of a new law on royalties in the information society and the digital challenge.
BV President Bernd Burgemeister said the Alliance would be "open to all producers, even if they already belong to other associations". Certain leading producers’ associations, such as the Association of German Feature Film Producers and AG Spielfilm, have already announced that they will not be joining the organisation but that their members are free to do so. They also said that they plan to work in close collaboration with the Alliance.
