Never-ending nightmare in Die Tür
by Bénédicte Prot
After Green Desert (1999), Kebab Connection in 2005 (both winners of festival Audience Awards) and Where Is Fred? (2006), Anno Saul has been shooting his fourth feature, Die Tür ("The Door"), in Berlin since March 26.
At 45 years of age, the Bonn-born director and former student of the Munich Film and Television School is trying his hand at a new genre, the thriller.
The film’s protagonist is a failed painter who feels guilty about the death of his seven-year-old daughter. His life is falling apart. But then he is presented with a way out and the chance of a new start. In fact, his true nightmare is about to begin.
Die Tür’s lead role is played by well-known Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (currently appearing in Ole Christian Madsen’s Flame & Citron, which was widely released across Denmark at the weekend).
The rest of the cast includes prominent German actors Jessica Schwarz (Nothing But Ghosts, Warum Männer nicht zuhören und Frauen nicht einparken können); Thomas Thieme (the minister in The Lives of Others); and Heike Makatsch (Love Actually, Hui Buh: The Goofy Ghost).
The film is produced by Ralph Schwingel and Stefan Schubert for major Hamburg company Wüste Filmproduktion (who also produced Fatih Akin’s Head On, FC Venus [+see also:
film profile], and Emma’s Bliss [+see also:
film profile]), in co-production with Christoph Müller (Senator Filmproduktion).
The project has received financial backing from the Hamburg Schleswig Holstein regional fund, the FFA – German film regulating body, the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the DFFF (German Federal Film Fund).
