Six titles receive aid

The Dutch Film Fund has allocated production funds to six new films: two commercial projects and four smaller productions.

The biggest allocation was for The President, which Erik de Bruyn (Nadine [+see also:

) will direct for Lemming Film. The adaptation of the Khalid Boudou novel (itself a riff on Jerzy Kosinski’s Being There) received a provisional allocation of €600,000 and relates how Joesoef, an illegal Moroccan immigrant, became the first president of the Republic of the Netherlands.

Lemming film will also produce Ineke Houtman’s Mooi leven (“Beautiful Life”), in which a girl tries to help her Surinam grandfather remember things about his past.

Director Paul Ruven, currently in post-production on the South African set Surprise, will direct Gangsterboys, which will receive a maximum of €350,000 in production funds. The crime comedy was written by newcomer Orhan Sahin and focuses on two wannabe gangsters of Turkish origin who get themselves into a real mess. The film will be produced by Talent United.

Director Cyrus Frisch, whose Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me It Would Become This Bad in Afghanistan was shot on a cell phone, will receive funds for Oogverblindend (“Dazzling”), which focuses on a man in Argentina and a woman in the Netherlands who unburden themselves by phone. Stichting Filmkracht will produce the drama.

Director Frans Weisz will receive funds to complete his trilogy about a Jewish family that started with Leedvermaak from 1989 and continued with Qui vive in 2001. The last part is called Happy End and will be produced by Eyeworks Egmond.

Dutch deadpan director Alex van Warmerdam (Waiter [+see also:

) will receive production aid for De laatste dagen van Emma Blank (“The Last Days of Emma Blank”). The Grantiet Film production tells the story of a woman who expects to die soon – and of the household staff who expects the same.
