FESTIVALS Spain

Before the Fall wins Golden Biznaga at Malaga

by

F. Javier Gutiérrez’s debut film, Before the Fall has picked up the Golden Biznaga Award for Best Film at the 11th edition of the Malaga Spanish Film Festival.

This year’s Official Selection prize list is remarkably balanced, as eight of the 15 competition titles received some kind of award. The large number of prizes (no less than 15) is also striking.

The major prize-winner is Before the Fall, described by some critics as not particularly “Spanish” in style. This thriller about the end of the world also scooped the awards for Best Supporting Actress (Mariana Cordero), Best Make-up and Best Original Screenplay.

This is a real triumph for Andalusian film, as the title is a co-production between Seville-based Maestranza Films and Malaga-based Green Moon, Antonio Banderas’ production company.

Pretexts, the debut feature by actress Silvia Munt, received the awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography.

Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón’s latest film Todos estamos invitados (“We’re All Invited”) – a bold denouncement of ETA’s reign of terror – picked up the Special Jury Prize; and Cobardes (“Cowards”) by José Corbacho and Juan Cruz received the Critics’ Award.

The Best Actress award went to Ana Fernández, for Bienvenido a Farewell-Gutman, and the Best Actor award to Javier Cámara, for Fuera de carta (“Off the Menu”).

Andrés Di Tella’s Fotografías was crowned Best Documentary, outstripping Gonzalo Arijón’s Stranded: I Have Come from a Plane that Crashed on the Mountains, which won the Special Jury Prize and the Audience Award.

The ZonaZine jury crowned Irene Cardona’s Un novio para Yasmina (“A Boyfriend for Yasmina”) Best Film, closing the prize list for the latest edition of one of Spain’s most important festivals.
