(a German co-production with a US flavour), French actress and director Julie Delpy transports us to another time and place in her new film Countess.

This biographical film – which has entered post-production – centres on Elizabeth Báthory, known as the “blood countess”, a Hungarian aristocrat who was born in the 16th century and had over 600 young women tortured to death.

The shoot – which took place from February 18 to April 11 in Berlin, Thuring and Saxony – brought together an impressive cast. Delpy stars as the ghastly heroine, alongside Daniel Brühl (who appeared in 2 Days in Paris); Romanian actress Anamaria Marinca, who was discovered in Cristian Mungiu’s major Cannes prize-winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days [+see also:

; William Hurt; and the children of actors Anna Maria Mühe and Nikolai Kinski.

Countess is co-produced by German company X Filme International and French company Celluloid Dreams. X Filme will also release the title domestically and Celluloid will handle international sales.
