Swiss director honoured in Schwerin
After Bettina Oberli (North Wind) in 2005, Stina Werenfels (Going Private) in 2006 and Oliver Rihs (Black Sheep) in 2007, once again a young Swiss filmmaker has won the German television Norddeutschen Rundfunk (NDR) Best Director Award at the FilmKunstFest in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Stefan Jäger received the award for Hello Goodbye at the 18th edition of the festival, which was held from April 29-May 4 in Schwerin (Germany).
The jury, comprised of five filmmakers, lauded the feature for the way in which it tackles a taboo subject – assisted suicide – with a great deal of “tenderness, sensitivity and joyfulness”. The credit goes above all to the director and the two leading actors, Mona Petri and Stefan Gubser, who co-wrote the screenplay.
A prolific director, Jäger has made numerous shorts and features since the early 1990s, including documentaries and narrative films. His film Boxing Jesus was released in theatres in German-speaking Switzerland on May 1.
