"UGC celebrates Europe" for a new shared culture

by

“Cinema contributes to a shared culture, and thus a shared public opinion – which is the only way to overcome the lack of legitimacy that many citizens feel towards the European institutions,” said Luciana Castellina, the former president of the cultural commission of the European Parliament, in speaking of UGC Celebrates Europe, which on May 9 will bring to several multiplexes of the French group UGC Ciné Cité (which also operates in Belgium, Spain and Italy) 27 films from all the member states of the European Union (see our dossier).

“As long as children know nothing about capitals such as Tallinn or Sofia it will be difficult to speak of a shared identity,” added Castellina, the current president of Cineuropa and Eurovisioni, the festival “that for 20 years has worked to construct a European audiovisual space”: and which with UGC Ciné Cité Italia is promoting the initiative in Rome as well, for the third consecutive year.
