FESTIVALS Italy

Bettini steps down as president but RomeFest continues

by

Goffredo Bettini, president of the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, behind the RomeFilmFest, announced yesterday that he was leaving his position to "prevent any possible controversy and political exploitation" after the election of Gianni Alemanno, the new mayor of Rome. Bettini is coordinator of the opposing Democratic Party.

After a meeting between the two, Alemanno said that the festival, which has been in the mayor’s sights since his electoral campaign, will continue but with a restructuring of the foundation.

This morning, Gian Luigi Rondi, president of the David di Donatello awards, said "he was not the least bit interested" in the speculations made by newspapers of his possible presidency of the festival after Bettini’s resignation.
