TVE grants €34m in film funding

by

The same funds for fewer films is the strategy that TVE, in collaboration with the RTVE corporation, will adopt towards Spanish and European film, announced at a press conference. The Spanish public broadcaster has thus earmarked €34m for around 70 productions, including features, TV dramas and documentaries, compared to the 80-plus films financed in 2007.

TVE has so far confirmed its support for 43 projects, while eight are under negotiation. The total number is expected to rise to 70 in the coming months.

The most significant change is in the backing given to theatrical features, whose number has decreased from 55 in 2007 to 35 or 37 this year. According to director Javier Pons, this redistribution is due to a desire to “make their investment more profitable, with a more rigorous plan". On the other hand, the quota of TV dramas has increased from eight to 13, and the number of documentaries will be between 22 and 25.

The projects TVE has so far pledged to support during 2008 include new works by three Oscar-winning directors: Pedro Almodóvar (Broken Embraces), Fernando Trueba (El baile de la victoria) and Francis Ford Coppola (Tetro). Other projects set to receive backing are Joaquín Oristrell’s Dieta mediterránea (“Mediterranean Diet”), Vicente Aranda’s Luna caliente (“Warm Moon”) and Ángeles González-Sinde’s Una palabra tuya (“A Word From You”).

Apart from film financing, TVE emphasised the importance of the distribution of Spanish films. Between them, TVE’s two channels have aired a total of 36 Spanish film premieres in the first half of 2008, compared to 38 in 2007.
