EXHIBITORS Switzerland

New theatres open in deprived areas

by

In a European landscape dominated by concentrations, this event deserves a mention: in the past month, five new movie theatres have opened in areas where the big screen had disappeared or risked disappearing.

Ten years after the closure of its last movie theatre, the small town of Belp (Bern district) has just acquired two Kino um die Ecke theatres (a 70 and 128-seater) thanks to regional company Cinérgie.

In Aigle (Vaud district), the perseverance of Cinérive – which operates mainly in Vevey and Montreux – prevented the closure of the movie theatre. At the end of June, the old, dilapidated building was replaced by the Cosmopolis multiplex and its three theatres (244, 117 and 91-seater). The exhibitor guarantees "a varied programming that will appeal to film enthusiasts as well as viewers looking for escapism".

Unlike in other countries, the determination of Swiss exhibitors has succeeded in maintaining a particularly dense network of theatres which covers the entire territory.
